Emil Filla and Milan Grygar

On October 13, 2009, Zdeněk Sklenář Gallery opened an exhibition entitled “Emil Filla and Milan Grygar”.

For the first time, the oeuvres of a recognised classic, Professor Emil Filla, and his student, Milan Grygar, are being shown within the same exhibition. These two apparently differing methods of artistic expression joined by their revolutionary concepts: Emil Filla was at the launch of Cubism in the Czech lands, while Milan Grygar stands alongside John cage as a pioneer in the use of sound in fine art.

For the first time in history, the acoustic drawings of Milan Grygar are exhibited together with recordings of authentic sounds that are formed during the creation of the artwork.

In the exhibition, Filla’s single painting Head of a Man with a Top Hat, an oil painting from 1914, faces opposite a video projection of live recordings from Milan Grygar’s principal events in 1969, 1973 and 1982, which have earned international respect. One of projections was presented by the artist once again at the Drawing Center in New York in 2001, and now audiences in the Czech Republic will be able to see it as part of this radical exhibition.

Cubism started to work with the bottom, side and front projections, bringing the expression out of perspective and creating a closed space in which time plays an essential role. In this connection, Cubists speak of the Fourth Dimension. In Milan Grygar’s acoustic drawings, sound becomes this element of time and space.

The Emil Filla and Milan Grygar exhibition opening included the opening for the fine press publication Tao Te Ching, translated into Czech by Oldřich Král. The book is being issued in an edition of 303 copies and features an original by Milan Grygar.

The curator of the exhibition is Zdeněk Sklenář.
